About

April Liu, PhD 劉詩源

I am a cultural storyteller and creative producer specializing in Asian arts and cultures. My work bridges curation, filmmaking, writing, and fundraising to support artists and organizations through exhibitions, media projects, public programs, and community partnerships.

Since completing my doctorate in East Asian Art History & Visual Culture (UBC, 2012), I’ve collaborated with communities across Turtle Island (North America), Asia, and South America on projects that revitalize cultural knowledge. From 2022 to 2025, I led programming and education at the Chinatown Storytelling Centre, developing initiatives that brought Chinese Canadian stories to wider audiences. Earlier roles include Curator of Public Programs and Engagement at the Museum of Anthropology (UBC), where I worked with artists and Indigenous knowledge keepers worldwide.

As an emerging filmmaker, I directed The Prop Master’s Dream (2025), the first documentary to focus on Cantonese Opera in North America. My media projects have also been featured on CBC Gem, CBC Arts, CBC Radio Canada, Guangzhou Radio and TV, and Chinese National Radio (CNR). Other highlights include serving as a lead organizer for His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s visit to Vancouver in 2014 and consulting for UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage section in 2016.

I am currently an Advisor of Development and Programming at the award-winning Chinatown Storytelling Centre, an initiative of the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation.
